Onesia agilis

Onesia agilis is a species belonging to the Calliphoridae family, commonly known as blow flies, within the order Diptera. While many members of this family are primarily associated with scavenging or decomposition, certain species can interact negatively with weakened plant tissues, necessitating their consideration in pest management programs.

Although adult flies primarily feed on nectar and organic matter, the larval stage can pose a secondary threat to various plant species. The damage is primarily observed when larvae infiltrate already stressed or damaged plant tissues, effectively accelerating decay and promoting the establishment of opportunistic bacterial and fungal pathogens.

The life cycle of this insect includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs in proximity to decaying organic matter or upon existing wounds on the surface of plant parts. Given optimal temperature conditions, the species can complete multiple generations per growing season, increasing the risk of infestation during peak months.

The damage caused by Onesia agilis is often identified by the softening of plant tissues and an associated foul odor, which mimics natural decay. Fruits and stems of various ornamental and horticultural crops are particularly susceptible, especially in conditions of high humidity which facilitate the penetration of the larvae into the plant's internal structure.

To effectively manage and mitigate the presence of this pest, the following practices are recommended:

• Prompt removal and destruction of fallen fruit and decaying organic waste.
• Conducting regular sanitary pruning to remove infected or damaged branches.
• Consistent monitoring of plant health to detect early signs of localized decay.

• Utilizing biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi, when adult populations reach significant thresholds.
