Description

Systematic position. The Brimstone moth (Opisthograptis luteolata) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Geometridae. This moth is a common inhabitant of deciduous forests, gardens, and hedgerows across its range, where it often goes unnoticed until localized infestations occur.

Host plants and damage. This species is a polyphagous pest, known to feed on a variety of plants within the Rosaceae family. Primary host plants include apple, pear, plum, cherry, and hawthorn trees. Larvae consume the foliage, causing ragged edges on leaves, skeletonization, and in severe cases, significant defoliation that weakens the host plant.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle typically consists of two generations per year. The insect overwinters as a pupa, protected within a cocoon nestled among leaf litter or shallow soil layers. Adults emerge in spring to lay eggs on host plant leaves. The larvae, often called loopers due to their unique movement, possess excellent camouflage, mimicking twigs and leaf veins to avoid predation.

Pest impact. The primary economic damage is caused by the larval stage feeding on leaves. Extensive feeding reduces the photosynthetic surface area of the tree, which negatively impacts fruit development and overall vigor. While healthy, mature trees can often withstand minor infestations, young trees and nursery stock are highly vulnerable to stunted growth caused by heavy browsing.

Protection measures. Effective control involves both cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices, such as removing leaf debris and cultivating the soil beneath trees in late autumn, help destroy pupae. During the growing season, if monitoring indicates high larval density, the application of selective insecticides or biological preparations like Bacillus thuringiensis can effectively manage the population.
