Description

The Orcus woodwasp is a member of the Siricidae family within the Hymenoptera order. As a typical xylophagous insect, it plays a specific role in forest ecosystems, primarily focusing on the decay of weakened or damaged coniferous tree species.

This pest prefers conifers such as spruce, pine, and fir. It targets trees that are stressed by environmental factors, drought, or previous disease outbreaks. While often viewed as a secondary pest, it significantly impacts the structural integrity of timber if the infestation becomes widespread.

The life cycle of Orcus is intimately tied to symbiotic fungi. When the female inserts her eggs into the xylem, she inoculates the wood with fungal spores. This fungus begins to break down the wood fibers, turning them into a digestible nutrient source for the developing larvae.
