Nettle orthezia

The nettle orthezia (Orthezia urticae) is a plant-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Ortheziidae. It is a distinct species characterized by its appearance, often covered with white waxy plates, which serve as a protective layer against environmental factors and natural predators.

This pest infests a wide range of plants, including nettle, orach, various mint species, as well as many ornamental garden plants. It is commonly found in moist, shaded areas where host plants grow abundantly, often transitioning to cultivated plants when their primary food sources are depleted.

The biological development of the nettle orthezia follows a hemimetabolous cycle. Females deposit their eggs into a specialized wax ovisac, which is attached to the body of the adult. The larvae pass through several instars while actively feeding, gradually causing cumulative stress to the host plant through the extraction of phloem sap.

Damage is typically manifested by stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and curling. A significant consequence of infestation is the production of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer of mold blocks light and hinders photosynthesis, significantly affecting the overall health and ornamental value of the vegetation.
