Orthotaenia leafroller

Orthotaenia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Tortricidae, within the order Lepidoptera. The most prominent species is Orthotaenia undulana. These insects are widely distributed in temperate zones and can cause significant damage to both wild and cultivated plants, particularly in orchards and agricultural plantations.

The pest targets a wide variety of crops, including fruit trees, berry bushes (such as raspberries and blackberries), and various ornamental plants. The larvae are polyphagous, feeding on young leaves, buds, flower clusters, and developing fruits, which often results in substantial loss of foliage and decreased harvest yields.

The biology of the species is closely linked to seasonal temperature fluctuations. The insect typically overwinters as a larva in dense silk cocoons hidden within leaf litter or the upper soil layers. In spring, after the diapause period, the larvae emerge, begin feeding actively, and eventually undergo pupation. Adult moths emerge in early summer, after which females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves.

The damage pattern is characterized by leaf rolling, where larvae use silk threads to bind leaves together, creating protective nests. Inside these nests, the larvae skeletonize the leaf tissue. This activity causes not only direct damage to plant tissues but also creates an environment conducive to secondary fungal infections, further stressing the plant and reducing its overall vigor and productivity.

Management strategies for this pest require an integrated approach. Recommended practices include:

• Applying early spring insecticide treatments before bud break to target overwintering larvae.
• Regular sanitation, including the removal and destruction of leaf litter where larvae hibernate.
• Encouraging natural predators such as birds and predatory insects within the garden ecosystem.
• Using pheromone traps for population monitoring to ensure precise application of biological or chemical pesticides during peak larval emergence periods.
