Grey Tortrix

The Grey Tortrix (Orthotaenia undulana) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is widely distributed across various habitats, acting as a significant pest in orchards and nurseries, capable of causing noticeable damage to various woody plants.

This pest is known for its polyphagous nature, feeding on a wide variety of host plants. Fruit trees such as apples, pears, cherries, and plums are primary targets. The larvae are particularly damaging, as they prefer to feed on young leaves, buds, and shoots, which can lead to stunted growth and reduced fruit yield.

The life cycle involves overwintering as mature larvae in sheltered areas such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or soil. In the spring, they pupate and emerge as adults. After mating, the females lay eggs on the leaves. Depending on the local climate, the insect can complete one or more generations throughout the growing season.

The characteristic sign of an infestation is the presence of webbed leaves, where the larvae hide and feed. By spinning leaves together, they create protective shelters that prevent natural predators from reaching them. This feeding activity leads to significant defoliation, weakening the tree's vigor and negatively impacting the fruit production capacity.
