Description
The rice water weevil (Oryzophagus oryzae) is a notorious pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is considered one of the most destructive insects in rice cultivation, particularly in regions that utilize flooded irrigation systems for crop production.
The primary host for this pest is rice. However, adults and larvae may also survive on various aquatic grasses and sedges. Their ability to thrive in wet environments makes them highly specialized and difficult to eradicate from affected agricultural areas, posing a constant threat to yields.
The biological cycle of the weevil is strictly aquatic. After overwintering in dry areas near fields, the adults migrate to flooded rice fields. Females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue submerged in water. Upon hatching, the larvae crawl down into the soil to feed on the root system, which is the most damaging phase of their life cycle.
Adult weevils feed by creating narrow longitudinal slits on the rice leaves, which is a key diagnostic sign of infestation. Larval feeding on the roots is much more severe, often causing stunted growth, yellowing of the foliage, and significant yield loss due to reduced nutrient uptake and potential plant mortality.
Integrated management is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include water management techniques such as draining fields at specific stages of larval development to disrupt their cycle. Furthermore, the application of systemic insecticides, either as seed treatments or foliar sprays during peak adult migration, is a standard practice.
