The red mason bee (Osmia bicornis) is a solitary bee belonging to the Megachilidae family. While widely celebrated for its pollination efficiency, in certain agricultural and greenhouse settings, the species can become a nuisance, necessitating specific management practices to prevent interference with equipment and infrastructure.

Taxonomically, this species is classified under the order Hymenoptera. Although they are not herbivores that consume plant tissues, their nesting behavior creates physical disturbances. They are known for utilizing various cavities for their nests, including tubular structures, which can be problematic in specific horticultural setups where precision is required.

The life cycle involves an early spring emergence. Females seek out nesting sites, where they construct individual cells separated by mud walls. Each cell is provisioned with a mixture of pollen and nectar before an egg is laid. The larvae develop inside these cells and remain in a dormant pupal state within a cocoon until the following season.

Damage caused by Osmia bicornis is primarily physical. In agricultural environments, they often clog irrigation emitters, drip tape, and hose pipes with mud and pollen, disrupting water distribution systems. Additionally, they may bore into rotting wood or existing cracks in greenhouse structures, which can accelerate the deterioration of wooden agricultural supports.

Management and prevention involve physical exclusion techniques rather than chemical control. To protect irrigation systems, it is essential to use appropriate end caps on drip lines. Furthermore, sealing crevices in wooden structures and using fine insect mesh on greenhouse vents can significantly reduce the likelihood of colonization by red mason bees in unwanted areas.
