The bull-headed mason bee (Osmia taurus) is a member of the order Hymenoptera and the family Megachilidae. This solitary bee species has gained significant attention as an invasive pollinator. Originally native to Asia, it has successfully established populations in North America, where its behavior occasionally brings it into conflict with nursery and garden management practices.

The host range of Osmia taurus is quite broad, as the bees are generalist foragers. They damage various ornamental and fruit-bearing species by harvesting leaf sections. This behavior is necessary for constructing brood cells within their nests, but it results in significant aesthetic damage and potential physiological stress to the plants involved.

The biology of the species is characterized by an early spring emergence. Females are highly efficient at locating suitable cavities, including hollow stems and man-made structures, for nesting. The development process, from egg to adult, occurs within the nest cells. They typically produce one generation per year, spending the winter as dormant adults inside their protective cocoons.

The primary impact of these bees is the physical destruction of leaf tissue. By creating precise, crescent-shaped or circular holes, they reduce the surface area available for photosynthesis. In high-density populations, this can lead to severe defoliation of nursery plants, which affects their growth rates and commercial value in the horticultural market.
