Osphranteria lata, commonly referred to as the apricot borer, is a destructive wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. This pest is specifically notorious for its impact on orchards located in warm climates, where it can cause severe economic losses by attacking the structural integrity of fruit trees.
The primary host plants for this insect are species within the Rosaceae family. While the apricot tree is the main victim, the borer is also known to infest peach, plum, almond, and wild fruit varieties. Its ability to thrive in various stone fruit species makes it a persistent challenge for commercial fruit growers who must manage its population density annually.
The life cycle of the apricot borer is complex, with the larval stage posing the greatest threat. Adult females deposit eggs in bark crevices, and upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the cambium and xylem layers. They feed extensively on the tree's internal tissue, creating complex galleries that disrupt the vascular system and eventually lead to dieback of branches or the entire tree.
