Maxwell's mite (Oxycenus maxwelli) is a microscopic pest belonging to the Eriophyidae family, specifically known as four-legged or gall mites. Due to their minute size and vermiform bodies, these arachnids are difficult to detect with the naked eye. They primarily infest evergreen trees and shrubs, often remaining unnoticed until significant aesthetic damage occurs.

The primary host plants for Oxycenus maxwelli are members of the Cupressaceae family, particularly cypress (Cupressus) and arborvitae (Thuja) species. In nursery environments, these mites can become major pests, causing significant economic damage to ornamental stock by compromising the health and appearance of the conifers.

The life cycle of this mite is highly dependent on environmental conditions. It undergoes egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Favorable conditions, especially dry and warm weather, facilitate rapid population growth. The mites often cluster within the scale leaves of the host, protecting them from environmental stresses and making them harder to treat with traditional pesticides.
