Oxychilus is a genus of air-breathing land snails belonging to the family Oxychilidae. These gastropods are frequently encountered in garden ecosystems, where they thrive in damp and shaded environments. Due to their secretive nature, they often reside within soil crevices, underneath dense vegetation, or inside piles of garden debris, making early detection challenging for gardeners.

The pest primarily targets a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. Vulnerable species include various leafy greens, lettuce, cabbage, and young seedlings of ornamental flowers. Because they feed on tender plant tissues, they are particularly destructive to early-stage crops, potentially compromising the entire growth cycle of the affected plants if left unmanaged.

The biological cycle of Oxychilus is highly dependent on humidity levels and soil moisture. They reproduce by laying eggs in moist soil or sheltered areas. Their activity peaks during cool, rainy seasons, which provide optimal conditions for movement and feeding. Understanding these cycles is crucial for predicting infestation periods and timing protective interventions.

The damage caused by Oxychilus is typically identified by irregular, ragged holes in the leaves and stems of susceptible plants. In severe cases, they may consume the entirety of a seedling.
