Description

The cellar glass snail (Oxychilus cellarius) belongs to the order Stylommatophora within the family Oxychilidae. This small land mollusk is characterized by a shiny, translucent, and flattened shell that typically measures around 10–12 mm in diameter. It thrives in damp, sheltered environments such as cellars, greenhouses, and gardens with dense vegetation.

The pest causes significant damage to a wide range of horticultural crops. Its primary food sources include young vegetable seedlings, ornamental flowers, leafy greens, strawberries, and soft fruits. By feeding on plant tissues, these snails can destroy young shoots overnight, leading to substantial losses in both home gardens and commercial plots.

The life cycle is closely linked to moisture levels. These snails are hermaphroditic and lay clutches of eggs in moist soil crevices or decaying organic matter. Their activity peaks during cool, humid weather, and they can remain active throughout the year in controlled indoor environments like greenhouses or storage basements.

Damage symptoms include irregular, ragged holes in leaves and deep, gouging marks in fruits and vegetables. Beyond direct physical destruction, the mucous secretions left behind by the snails attract secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens. This often leads to the rapid decay of the affected plant parts, making them unsellable and unpalatable.

Effective control strategies focus on habitat modification and direct removal. Gardeners should prioritize clearing debris, removing piles of leaves, and pruning low-hanging foliage to increase sunlight penetration. When infestations are severe, using barriers like copper tape or applying iron phosphate-based molluscicides is recommended to minimize impact on the environment.
