Zonites algirus

Zonites algirus is a large land snail belonging to the family Zonitidae and the order Stylommatophora. This gastropod species is known for its impact in regions with Mediterranean-like climates, where it often thrives in moist, shaded environments, becoming a significant pest in agricultural fields and home gardens.

This mollusc primarily damages vegetable, berry, and ornamental crops. It consumes a wide range of plant materials, including young seedlings, succulent leaves, and fruits. Seedlings of cabbage, lettuce, and various decorative plants are particularly vulnerable, often suffering severe tissue loss, which makes them susceptible to secondary fungal pathogens and rotting.

The biology of Zonites algirus is strongly influenced by humidity levels. Its life cycle involves laying eggs in moist soil or beneath thick layers of organic debris. Being nocturnal, these snails spend daylight hours hidden in cool, damp locations such as under rocks, logs, or deep within weed cover, making them difficult to detect during standard daytime inspections.

Damage symptoms usually appear as large, irregular holes on foliage and stems. Because they feed aggressively, a large population of these snails can quickly defoliate young plantings, causing significant economic losses for farmers and gardeners. Their presence is often identified by the damage pattern and the residual mucus trails left behind.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Maintaining field hygiene by removing weeds and plant debris.
