Red-necked longhorn beetle

Pachyteria ruficollis is a species of beetle belonging to the Cerambycidae family, commonly known as longhorn beetles. This insect is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that primarily targets specific deciduous and evergreen trees, posing a particular threat to commercial citrus plantations in its native ranges.

The host range of Pachyteria ruficollis is primarily focused on citrus species, including lemon, orange, and mandarin trees. The beetle prefers trees that are already showing signs of physiological stress or poor health, although healthy specimens can also be colonized if the pest population density is sufficiently high in the surrounding area.

The biology of this species is characterized by a long larval stage spent inside the wood. After the eggs are laid in bark crevices, the emerging larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood. They construct complex galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the host tree, essentially cutting off the flow of water and nutrients to the canopy.

The damage caused by this pest is often cumulative and can be devastating. As the larvae feed, they create exit holes and push out frass (bore dust), which are tell-tale signs of infestation. Typical impacts include:

• Canopy dieback and wilting of affected branches;
• Structural weakening of the tree trunk leading to mechanical breakage;
• Reduced yield and poor fruit quality;
• Long-term decline in tree vigor leading to eventual mortality.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining optimal tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization can help trees resist attacks. If an infestation is detected, physical removal of affected limbs and the use of targeted systemic insecticides are necessary. In severe cases, removing and destroying infested trees is the only way to prevent the pest from spreading to neighboring healthy plants.
