Four-spotted cimbicid sawfly

The Four-spotted cimbicid sawfly (Palaeocimbex quadrimaculatus) is a member of the Cimbicidae family within the Hymenoptera order. It is a large, conspicuous insect recognized by the distinct four spots on its wings. Despite its intimidating appearance, it is a significant defoliator, posing a notable threat to various orchards and forest ecosystems.

The primary hosts for this pest include trees within the Rosaceae family. Growers frequently report infestations on apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees, as well as almond. The pest is particularly attracted to healthy, fast-growing trees where the foliage quality is optimal for larval development, leading to significant site-specific damage during the growing season.

The life cycle of Palaeocimbex quadrimaculatus involves complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge in the spring, synchronized with the budding phase of host trees. After mating, females deposit eggs into the leaf tissues using a saw-like ovipositor. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, characterized by rapid growth and intense feeding behavior throughout several developmental instars.

Damage is characterized by extensive leaf skeletonization or complete defoliation. When larval populations are high, the reduction in photosynthetic leaf area significantly weakens the host tree. This physiological stress can result in stunted growth, poor fruit set, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors, such as fungal infections or winter damage, potentially leading to long-term decline.

Managing this pest requires an integrated approach to maintain tree health. Early detection through visual monitoring is critical for timely intervention. Cultural practices, such as soil cultivation under the canopy during the autumn months, can effectively disrupt the pupation site and reduce the following year's adult emergence. If population thresholds are exceeded, targeted applications of insecticides should be utilized to protect the canopy while minimizing impact on beneficial pollinators.
