The oak tortrix moth (Pammene splendidulana) is a small moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is recognized as a specialized pest that specifically targets oak species, making it a significant subject of study in forest entomology and silviculture.
The primary hosts of this insect are trees of the genus Quercus. The larvae, or caterpillars, feed internally on the acorns, which makes the pest particularly destructive to forest regeneration efforts that rely on natural acorn production for the growth of new stands.
The life cycle of Pammene splendidulana consists of a single generation per year. The larvae overwinter as mature caterpillars within durable cocoons, typically hidden in the crevices of the tree bark or within the leaf litter beneath the host trees. They pupate in the spring, emerging as adults to coincide with the developing fruit of the oak.
