Description

The Jersey tiger moth (Euplagia quadripunctaria) is a moth of the Erebidae family. While the adult moth is known for its striking appearance and diurnal activity, it is the larval stage—the caterpillar—that poses a threat to various plants, acting as a generalist herbivore in domestic and agricultural settings.

This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide array of host plants. It commonly affects vegetables, berry shrubs like raspberries and currants, and can cause localized damage to nursery saplings. Infestations typically originate from neglected areas or overgrown weed patches adjacent to crop fields.

The biological cycle is univoltine, featuring one generation per year. The species overwinters as a larva in the litter layer or near the roots of host plants. In the spring, the caterpillars emerge to feed aggressively. Pupation occurs within a loose cocoon spun between leaves or in the topsoil, with adult moths appearing from mid-summer onwards.

The damage caused by larvae includes leaf skeletonization and the consumption of leaf margins. In cases of significant outbreaks, the defoliation can be severe, leading to stunted plant growth, reduced vigor, and decreased crop yields. Young vegetables and horticultural crops are particularly vulnerable to sudden attacks by growing larvae.

Management strategies focus on habitat modification and chemical intervention. Eliminating host weeds is the primary cultural control method to reduce the population density. For severe infestations, targeted application of contact-stomach insecticides is recommended during the early larval stages for maximum efficacy.
