Systematic position. The wormwood tortrix (lat. Pandemis chondrillana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. This species is a recognized pest in various horticultural environments, known for its ability to adapt to both fruit trees and various herbaceous hosts.

Affected crops and damage. The larvae feed on a wide range of plants, including apple, pear, peach, and apricot trees, as well as various species of wormwood (Artemisia). Damage involves feeding on buds, young leaves, and fruit sets. Larvae typically web leaves together or bore into fruits, leaving unsightly entry holes and promoting secondary infections, which significantly reduces the harvest quality.

Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. It typically overwinters as young larvae within protective silk hibernacula situated in bark crevices or under plant debris. With the onset of spring, the larvae become active, feeding on emerging buds and foliage before entering the pupal stage, followed by the emergence of adults that lay eggs for subsequent generations.

Economic impact. The economic damage caused by Pandemis chondrillana is significant, particularly in commercial orchards where fruit quality is paramount. The pest's habit of feeding within concealed environments (spun leaves or inside the fruit) makes it a persistent challenge for standard pest control programs, requiring precise timing for intervention.

Control measures. Effective management of the wormwood tortrix requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Orchard sanitation by removing dead bark and leaf litter to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Monitoring adult flight activity using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
• Application of selective insecticides during the peak of egg-hatching.
• Encouraging the presence of natural biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps and predatory bugs.
