Description
The summer fruit tortrix moth (Pandemis dumetana) is a member of the Tortricidae family, known as a significant pest in orchards across Europe and parts of Asia. It is frequently identified by its distinct moth stage and the damage caused by its larvae to fruit-bearing trees.
This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. It primarily targets pome fruits such as apples and pears, as well as stone fruits like plums and cherries. It may also occasionally colonize various forest trees and ornamental shrubs if they are in close proximity to the orchard.
The life cycle typically consists of two generations per year. The larvae overwinter in the late larval stages, hiding within protected sites like bark crevices or dried leaves. As temperatures rise in the spring, the larvae emerge to feed on budding leaves and flowers, eventually pupating before the adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs.
Larval feeding is the primary source of economic damage. The caterpillars create characteristic rolled leaves fastened together with silk, which serve as their shelter. They graze on leaves and frequently chew into the surface of developing fruits, causing scarring and deformities that significantly reduce the commercial value of the crop.
Control strategies for this pest require an integrated approach. Orchard sanitation, including the removal of infested leaves and debris, is essential for reducing the population density. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the early larval stages, often timed using monitoring tools like pheromone traps to ensure the precise application of selective insecticides.
