Pandinus

Systematic position. Pandinus (lat. Pandinus) belongs to the order Scorpiones and the family Scorpionidae. It is a genus of large-bodied scorpions widely known in the exotic pet trade. In the agricultural context, these organisms are not pests of crops in the traditional sense, as they do not consume plant material, but act as predators of smaller soil-dwelling invertebrates.

Biology and life cycle. These scorpions are endemic to tropical and subtropical regions. They are nocturnal hunters that spend most of their time in burrows or under leaf litter. The life cycle is characterized by viviparity, where the female gives birth to developed young, which are then carried on the mother's back until their first molt, ensuring high survival rates in stable environments.

Character of damage and harmfulness. The agricultural significance of Pandinus is minimal or indirect. They do not feed on plant tissues or sap. However, in specific nursery or greenhouse settings, their digging behavior can create large burrows. These burrows may disturb the soil architecture around the root systems of delicate ornamental plants or seedlings, potentially leading to localized physiological stress.

Crops affected. There is no evidence of Pandinus feeding on commercial crops. Instead, the interaction is purely mechanical. Plants grown in tropical glasshouses or nurseries with high humidity, which mimic the natural habitat of these scorpions, are the most likely to experience soil disturbance due to the presence of these arachnids.

Control measures. Since they are not primary plant pests, chemical control is not recommended. If their presence interferes with agricultural tasks, non-invasive management is preferred:

• Remove debris and leaf litter where scorpions hide.
• Improve soil drainage to discourage burrowing activities.
• Ensure protective clothing is worn by workers in field environments.
• Maintain natural control by habitat modification rather than using pesticides.
