Citrus red mite

Panonychus citri

Description

The Citrus red mite (Panonychus citri) is a significant pest belonging to the order Acariformes and the family Tetranychidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive mite species affecting citrus production globally, capable of causing substantial yield losses if not managed appropriately.

This pest primarily infests citrus species, including oranges, lemons, mandarins, and grapefruits. While it prefers citrus, the mite is also known to feed on other crops such as tea, pears, plums, and various ornamental plants, making it a versatile and persistent threat in different agricultural environments.

The biological cycle of the Citrus red mite is relatively short. Under ideal temperatures of 20–25°C, the lifecycle from egg to adult can be completed in about 12 to 20 days. Females deposit their eggs on the leaves and sometimes on fruit. Given the short generation time, multiple generations can occur during a single season, leading to rapid population surges during favorable conditions.

The damage is primarily caused by mites piercing the leaf tissue and extracting cell contents. This results in stippling, where leaves show tiny yellow or white spots that eventually turn brown and lead to leaf drop. Heavily infested trees may exhibit stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic capability, and significant economic loss in fruit quality and yield.

Effective control strategies include:

  • Regular field scouting to monitor mite population density and threshold levels.
  • The use of targeted acaricides, ensuring rotation of chemical classes to prevent resistance.
  • Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) techniques, including the release of predatory mites.
  • Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization to minimize stress-induced infestations.
  • Pruning and removing infested branches to reduce the overall mite population in the orchard.
