Panoquina

Panoquina is a genus of skipper butterflies (family Hesperiidae) known as significant agricultural pests. These insects are particularly detrimental to various grass species, including rice crops and sugarcane, primarily found in tropical and subtropical climates where they thrive due to abundant food sources.

Systematically, Panoquina belongs to the order Lepidoptera. While the adults are nectar-feeding butterflies, the larval stage is the primary cause of concern for agronomists. These caterpillars possess a strong chewing mouthpart, allowing them to rapidly consume foliage and severely impact the vigor of the host plant.

The life cycle of this pest involves egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Depending on temperature and moisture conditions, the developmental cycle can be very rapid, allowing for multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season. Females typically deposit eggs on the undersides of host leaves, ensuring that hatching larvae have immediate access to food.

Damage caused by Panoquina larvae is characterized by the consumption of leaf edges and the rolling of leaves with silk strands to form shelters. This activity reduces the total green area available for photosynthesis. Heavy infestations result in stunted growth, reduced tillering, and a significant decrease in total yield, which can be devastating in commercial farming.
