Description
Systematic position. The asparagus moth (Parahypopta caestrum) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Cossidae. It is a specialized pest primarily associated with the genus Asparagus, posing a significant threat to commercial asparagus production in various regions.
Host plants and economic impact. The primary host is Asparagus officinalis. The larvae cause severe damage by boring into the crowns, rhizomes, and the base of the spears. This internal feeding disrupts the plant's nutrient transport, leading to stunted growth, yellowing of foliage, and premature plant death, which significantly reduces the lifespan of the asparagus plantation.
Biology and lifecycle. The adults emerge in late spring and early summer. Mating occurs shortly after emergence, followed by the female laying eggs near the base of the host plants or in the soil. The emerging larvae immediately tunnel into the subterranean parts of the asparagus, where they continue to feed and grow. They overwinter as larvae in the soil or within the plant residues, pupating the following spring.
Nature of damage. Signs of infestation often include the presence of larval frass (sawdust-like debris) around the base of the shoots. As the infestation progresses, the spears become weak, fragile, and often collapse. Plants heavily attacked by the larvae fail to produce marketable spears and may die completely, leading to significant gaps in the field.

Early detection through pheromone monitoring or visual checks is crucial for successful management and to prevent the pest from becoming established.
