Paraiulus

Paraiulus is a genus of millipedes belonging to the order Julida. While they are primarily recognized for their role in decomposition and soil health as detritivores, certain species can become problematic in agricultural environments. When their natural food sources are limited or the population density is high, they turn to living plant tissues, causing significant damage to various crops.

The biology of Paraiulus is heavily dependent on soil moisture and organic matter availability. These millipedes thrive in cool, damp soil conditions. Their lifecycle involves multiple molting stages, with the larvae gradually gaining segments and legs. They typically overwinter deep in the soil profile, emerging to feed and reproduce when environmental conditions, particularly moisture levels, become favorable.

These pests affect a wide range of agricultural crops, including potatoes, sugar beets, cereals, and various horticultural plants. They are particularly destructive during the early growth stages of plants, targeting germinating seeds, young roots, and underground stems. The damage caused by their feeding often creates entry points for secondary pathogens like bacteria and fungi.

The severity of the damage is reflected in patchy crop stands, stunted growth, and the wilting of young seedlings. On root crops, the millipedes create deep, unsightly cavities, which drastically reduce the marketability and storage life of the produce. Fields with high levels of un-decomposed organic matter are at the highest risk for infestation.
