Olmecan millipede

Taxonomic position. The Olmecan millipede (Paraiulus olmecus) belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, class Diplopoda, order Julida, and family Paraiulidae. These organisms are distinguished by their elongated, cylindrical bodies composed of numerous segments, with each diplosegment bearing two pairs of legs, a trait that allows them to navigate efficiently through soil environments.

Affected crops. This species is a polyphagous pest that poses a significant threat to various crops. It primarily attacks plants with succulent underground parts, including potatoes, carrots, beets, and radishes. Furthermore, it often targets seeds and young seedlings, especially in damp environments where decaying organic matter is abundant.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Paraiulus olmecus is highly dependent on soil moisture and temperature. Adults and larvae dwell mainly in the topsoil, under leaf litter, or within moist organic mulch. Females deposit eggs in the soil. Upon hatching, larvae resemble miniature adults, gradually growing and adding body segments through successive molts during their development cycle.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The millipede causes damage by chewing cavities into roots, tubers, and the basal stems of young plants. These wounds not only physically weaken the plant but also serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to severe rot. Heavy infestations can result in total crop failure and significant reductions in yield quality.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this millipede. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep autumn plowing, and the removal of crop debris are highly effective in reducing population densities. Managing soil irrigation to avoid excessive wetness during root development is also critical. In cases of severe outbreaks, soil-applied insecticides may be used according to local agricultural regulations.
