Paramyelois

Paramyelois is a genus of moths belonging to the family Pyralidae. The most economically significant species in this genus is Paramyelois transitella, commonly known as the navel orangeworm. These pests are highly specialized, often targeting specific fruit and nut crops, and can cause severe agricultural losses if left unmanaged.

The primary hosts of this pest include a variety of orchard crops such as almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and figs. It is also known to infest citrus fruits, particularly those that have already suffered some mechanical damage or are splitting. The pest’s ability to move between different host species makes it a persistent challenge in integrated farm environments.

The life cycle of the insect consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs on the fruit surface. Once the larvae hatch, they bore into the fruit to feed on the internal tissues or kernels. The development speed of these stages is heavily dependent on ambient temperature, allowing for multiple generations per growing season.

The damage is primarily caused by larval feeding, which leads to internal fruit decay and contamination with webbing and excrement. In nut crops, the larvae consume the kernels entirely, significantly reducing yield quality and market value. Furthermore, the larval feeding sites act as entry points for pathogens, including fungi that produce harmful toxins.
