Parasteatoda is a genus of spiders belonging to the family Theridiidae, commonly known as cobweb spiders. In agricultural environments, particularly greenhouses and nurseries, these spiders are often found as uninvited residents. While they act as predators, they are categorized as pests due to their extensive web-building activities, which compromise the quality and health of commercial plants.

Systematically, Parasteatoda falls under the order Araneae. The most prominent species found in man-made structures is Parasteatoda tepidariorum. These spiders are well-adapted to the stable environmental conditions of indoor horticulture, where they find reliable shelter and a steady supply of small prey insects, allowing their populations to thrive alongside the cultivated plants.

The life cycle of these spiders consists of eggs, nymphs, and adults. Females deposit eggs into pear-shaped cocoons, which are often secured within their webs. Under stable greenhouse temperatures, they can complete multiple generations in a single year. Their ability to remain hidden during the day makes it difficult to detect an infestation until the webs become physically visible and start affecting the crop.

The damage caused by Parasteatoda is primarily physical and aesthetic. Their dense webs obstruct light, reducing the photosynthetic capacity of leaves, and can interfere with the pollination process in some flowering plants. Furthermore, the accumulation of spider waste and discarded insect parts within the webs creates a favorable environment for the growth of sooty mold, which can eventually infect and damage the plant tissues.

Management strategies focus on hygiene and structural maintenance. Regularly removing webs and cleaning greenhouse structures significantly discourages the spiders from recolonizing. Controlling the population of insects like aphids or fungus gnats, which serve as food sources for Parasteatoda, is a vital part of integrated pest management that indirectly limits the spider's survival. Mechanical removal remains the most recommended non-toxic approach for greenhouse growers.
