Description

Stubby root nematode (Paratrichodorus minor) is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Triplonchida and the family Trichodoridae. It is a migratory ectoparasite that feeds on the root tips of plants from the outside without entering the root tissues, causing severe physiological disturbances.

This nematode species has a wide host range, attacking various vegetables, cereal crops, and ornamental plants. It is predominantly found in light, sandy soils, where the pore structure allows the nematodes to move efficiently between soil particles to reach the root zone of their hosts.

The biological cycle of this pest involves several developmental stages, typically occurring within the soil profile. The lifespan is significantly influenced by moisture levels and soil temperature. Under optimal conditions, they can reproduce rapidly, leading to a massive buildup of the population that causes substantial economic damage to commercial crops.

The symptoms of damage are often referred to as «stubby root,» where the root system becomes stunted, thickened, and lacks secondary root hairs.
