Paratrichodorus nanus is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Trichodoridae. As an ectoparasite, it remains in the soil and feeds on the outer cells of plant roots, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant without entering the root tissues.

This nematode has a wide host range, primarily affecting plants grown in sandy or light-textured soils. Key crops susceptible to infestation include potatoes, sugar beets, various vegetables, and turf grasses. The pest's distribution is strongly correlated with soil particle size and moisture retention properties.

The life cycle of Paratrichodorus nanus involves development from eggs through several juvenile stages to maturity within the soil profile. The nematode utilizes a specialized feeding tube (onchiostyle) to pierce root cells. Reproduction and activity are highly influenced by soil temperature and moisture levels, typically peaking in temperate climates.

The primary damage caused by this nematode includes stunted root systems, reduced nutrient uptake, and generalized symptoms of chlorosis. Most importantly, P. nanus is known to be an efficient vector for the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). This viral transmission results in severe crop damage, such as spraing in potatoes and reduced marketability of produce.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include:
