Description
Parnara conjuncta is a moth species belonging to the family Hesperiidae (skippers). This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in rice-growing regions of Asia. The adult moths are small, fast-flying insects that prefer to inhabit agricultural ecosystems where their primary host plants are abundant, making them a recurring challenge for rice farmers.
The primary host plant for this species is rice (Oryza sativa). However, the larvae can also feed on various wild grasses that are typically found in and around paddy fields. The presence of these alternative host plants acts as a reservoir, allowing the pest population to persist throughout the year even when rice is not being actively cultivated in the primary fields.
The biological life cycle of Parnara conjuncta consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The female moths deposit eggs individually on the leaves of the host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding voraciously.
