Description
Parnara pellucida is a species of butterfly belonging to the Hesperiidae family, commonly known as the rice skipper. It is recognized as a significant pest of rice plants, particularly distributed across Asian regions where rice cultivation is intensive and the climate favors the development of lepidopteran insects.
The primary host plant for Parnara pellucida is rice (Oryza sativa). However, the larvae can also feed on various wild grasses found in the vicinity of paddy fields. These alternative hosts provide a refuge for the pest during non-cropping seasons, making management efforts more challenging.
The life cycle of the rice skipper consists of four developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females lay eggs individually on the leaf blades of the host plants. The larvae pass through several instars, feeding voraciously on the foliage before pupating within leaves that have been folded and fastened together with silk.
