Description
Parnara poutieri is a species of butterfly belonging to the Hesperiidae family, commonly referred to as the rice skipper. It is recognized as a specific agricultural pest that causes significant economic loss in rice-growing regions by targeting cereal crops.
The primary host for this pest is the rice plant (Oryza sativa). However, the larvae can also survive on various wild grass species surrounding paddy fields. These alternate hosts allow the pest population to persist and migrate into rice crops when conditions for reproduction are optimal.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive phase. After hatching, the larvae feed voraciously on rice foliage. They are known for rolling the leaves to create protective shelters, which also serve as sites for pupation.
The damage caused by the larvae manifests as irregular holes and completely consumed leaf margins. Heavy infestations result in severe defoliation, which hampers the photosynthetic capacity of the plants. This lack of energy production inhibits the growth of the rice plant and significantly reduces both the yield and the quality of the harvested grain.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to controlling this pest. This includes systematic field scouting to detect early infestations, the judicious use of contact and systemic insecticides, and biological control through natural predators. Furthermore, sanitation practices, such as removing weeds that serve as auxiliary food sources, are critical in reducing the overall pressure from the pest.
