Pelopidas

Pelopidas is a genus of butterflies belonging to the family Hesperiidae, commonly known as skippers. Within this genus, Pelopidas mathias, frequently referred to as the small branded swift or rice skipper, is a significant pest that poses a threat to various cereal crops in tropical and subtropical regions across Asia and Africa.

Taxonomically, the genus is classified under the order Lepidoptera, family Hesperiidae. Adult butterflies are characterized by a robust, hairy body and rapid, erratic flight patterns. They are usually brownish-colored with small semi-transparent spots on their wings, allowing them to blend into the agricultural environment.

The primary hosts for these larvae are grass species, with a particular affinity for rice (Oryza sativa). However, infestations have been recorded on other economically important crops such as sorghum, sugarcane, pearl millet, and maize. They can thrive on diverse grasses surrounding the agricultural fields.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae are the primary stage causing damage. Upon hatching, the larvae create protective shelters by folding or rolling leaves and securing them with silk. This behavior makes them difficult to detect and protects them from contact pesticides and predators.

The damage caused by Pelopidas larvae involves skeletonizing or consuming leaf edges, which significantly impairs the plant's photosynthetic ability and can lead to yield losses if the infestation is severe. Effective management practices include:
