Pelopidas mathias, commonly known as the dark branded swift, is a butterfly of the family Hesperiidae. In agricultural regions, particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, it is recognized as an important pest of rice and various cereal crops. Its larvae pose a significant threat to young plantations by feeding on leaves and disrupting plant development.
The host range of this pest is primarily restricted to the Poaceae family. Crops such as Oryza sativa (rice), Saccharum officinarum (sugarcane), Sorghum bicolor (sorghum), and Zea mays (maize) are the most frequent targets. Infestations are often more severe in regions with high humidity and favorable temperatures, which allow for rapid population expansion.
The life cycle of Pelopidas mathias consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs individually on the underside of host leaves.
