Description
Systematic position: The raspberry clearwing moth (Pennisetia hylaeiformis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. It is a significant wood-boring pest that specifically targets cane fruits throughout its geographical range.
Host plants: This pest primarily affects raspberries (Rubus idaeus). In some regions, it may also attack blackberry plants. The larvae feed internally, making them a particularly persistent threat to plant health.
Biology and life cycle: The insect typically has a two-year life cycle. Adults emerge in early summer, often mimicking wasps in appearance. Females deposit eggs near the base of the stems. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the cane base or roots, where they overwinter and feed for two consecutive seasons before pupating.
Nature of damage and harmfulness: Larval feeding causes the formation of galls at the base of the canes. These galls disrupt nutrient flow, causing stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting of the fruiting canes. Affected canes often break off at the damaged site, leading to significant yield losses and potential plant death.
Control measures: Management requires a combination of strategies:
- Systematic removal and burning of infested canes in early spring or late autumn.
- Maintaining good soil health to promote vigorous cane growth.
- Monitoring adult flight using pheromone traps to time any necessary insecticide applications effectively.
