Coffee leaf miner

Perileucoptera coffeella

Description

The coffee leaf miner (Perileucoptera coffeella) is a destructive micro-moth belonging to the Lyonetiidae family. It is recognized as one of the most significant pests affecting coffee production worldwide, particularly in Central and South America, where it can cause devastating economic losses.

This pest specifically targets coffee plants (Coffea species). The larvae of the moth are responsible for the damage; they mine the leaf parenchyma, creating characteristic irregular brown patches. These mines effectively kill the leaf tissue, which inhibits the plant's photosynthetic capacity and physiological health.

The life cycle of the insect is relatively short, usually spanning about 3 to 6 weeks, which allows for multiple generations within a single growing season. Eggs are deposited on the leaf surface, and upon hatching, larvae immediately bore into the leaf. Once inside, they are protected from most environmental stressors and external contact-based chemical treatments.

The economic impact of Perileucoptera coffeella is primarily driven by extensive defoliation. When trees lose their leaves, the coffee cherries do not receive sufficient energy, leading to stunted growth, bean malformation, and reduced crop yield. If the infestation is severe, it can weaken the coffee tree to the point of long-term productivity loss.

Managing the coffee leaf miner requires an integrated approach that minimizes environmental impact while maximizing control:

  • Regular monitoring of adult populations using pheromone traps.
  • Promoting natural biological control through the conservation of parasitoid wasps.
  • Strategic application of systemic insecticides during critical windows.
  • Proper canopy management and pruning to maintain healthy air circulation and reduce the pest's reproductive potential.
