American cockroach

The American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) belongs to the order Blattodea and the family Blattidae. Although primarily known as a household pest, it is a significant threat in agricultural settings, particularly in greenhouses, nurseries, and large-scale storage facilities where the climate provides favorable conditions for their proliferation.

This species is omnivorous and poses a direct threat to a wide range of horticultural crops. In greenhouse environments, they feed on various plant parts, including seedlings, young leaves, buds, and succulent stems. By consuming the primary growth points of young plants, they can stunt development or cause complete failure of crop production.

The biological cycle involves an incomplete metamorphosis consisting of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females produce oothecae, which contain multiple eggs and are deposited in dark, humid crevices. Their rapid reproductive cycle, coupled with their ability to thrive in temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C, ensures that populations can reach levels that are difficult to control without systematic intervention.

Damage assessment reveals that these pests cause significant economic losses through both consumption of plant material and contamination of agricultural produce. They act as vectors for various plant pathogens and bacteria, which spread rapidly across greenhouse benches after contact with infected individuals or their fecal waste, leading to secondary rot and disease outbreaks.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Strategies should prioritize sanitation, such as removing organic debris, and sealing structural gaps. Chemical control involves the use of specialized bait stations, dusts, and targeted insecticide applications. Early detection remains critical, and sticky traps should be placed strategically to monitor populations and identify infestation hot spots.
