The brown cockroach (Periplaneta brunnea) is an insect species belonging to the order Blattodea and the family Blattidae. While predominantly recognized as a household pest, it is also a significant concern for greenhouse, nursery, and conservatory environments, especially in warmer climates where it can thrive year-round, causing economic damage to ornamental and horticultural crops.

As a generalist feeder, this insect attacks a wide range of organic materials. In an agricultural context, it particularly targets tender seedlings, fresh shoots, and ripe fruits. The pest often hides in the potting soil or under greenhouse benches during the day, emerging at night to feed on roots or the lower stems of plants, often causing irreparable mechanical damage.

The biology of Periplaneta brunnea involves incomplete metamorphosis consisting of eggs, nymphs, and adults. A female produces an ootheca, which is a protective egg capsule containing numerous eggs. Nymphs undergo several instars, requiring specific humidity and temperature levels to develop. Their ability to tolerate various environmental conditions makes them highly resilient in controlled agricultural settings.

Damage caused by this pest includes deep holes in leaves and stems, which weakens the plant's structural integrity. Furthermore, the presence of these cockroaches and their waste products encourages the proliferation of secondary pathogens such as bacteria and fungi, which can lead to plant decay. The cosmetic damage alone is often enough to render crops unmarketable in professional greenhouse production.
