The Turkestan cockroach (Shelfordella lateralis, taxonomically often referred to as Periplaneta lateralis) is a member of the Blattodea order and the Blattidae family. It is a highly invasive species known for its ability to thrive in warm environments, which often includes greenhouses, warehouses, and industrial agricultural facilities.
This pest poses a significant threat to various plant species, particularly seedlings, sprouts, and succulent vegetables. In agricultural settings, they are observed feeding on both cultivated crops and organic waste, making them particularly difficult to eradicate once they establish a population within an enclosed growing environment.
The biological cycle of the Turkestan cockroach includes the egg stage, contained within an ootheca, followed by several nymphal instars before reaching adulthood. The developmental rate is strictly dependent on ambient temperature, with higher heat levels drastically accelerating the reproductive cycle and increasing population density.
The damage caused by these insects is characterized by jagged feeding marks on leaves, hollowing out of seedlings, and damage to ripening fruits.
