Yellow-striped prominent

The yellow-striped prominent (Phalera flavescens) is a moth species belonging to the family Notodontidae within the order Lepidoptera. Native primarily to East Asian regions, this moth is recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its larval stage's voracious feeding habits on the foliage of various ornamental and fruit-bearing trees.

This pest mainly targets members of the Rosaceae family. Fruit trees such as apples, pears, plums, and cherries are highly susceptible to infestations. In some areas, the larvae also feed on walnuts and other broad-leaved trees. The impact of the pest is most pronounced in commercial orchards and home gardens where it can cause localized defoliation if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of Phalera flavescens involves overwintering as a pupa in the soil. Adults emerge in late spring or early summer to mate and lay eggs on the undersides of host leaves. The larvae are gregarious during their early instar stages, living in clusters. As they mature, they disperse throughout the canopy, consuming increasingly large amounts of leaf tissue.

The damage caused by these caterpillars is characterized by extensive leaf skeletonization, eventually progressing to the complete consumption of leaves, leaving only midribs and petioles. Severe infestations result in significant canopy loss, which weakens the tree, reduces its ability to produce fruit in subsequent seasons, and can stunt growth, making the tree more vulnerable to environmental stresses.
