Description

Systematic position. The genus Phalonia belongs to the family Tortricidae, order Lepidoptera. These insects are well-known small moths that can cause significant damage in orchards and agricultural landscapes. In modern taxonomic classification, many species formerly assigned to Phalonia have been reclassified into the genus Cochylis, though the name remains common in agricultural literature.

Host plants. The pest primarily targets fruit trees, including apple, pear, and various berry shrubs. The larvae are specialized in feeding on the internal tissues of buds, blossoms, and young fruits. These moths are particularly problematic in managed orchards where they can cause severe yield losses by directly destroying developing fruit sets.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult moths are typically crepuscular or nocturnal. Females deposit eggs on leaves or directly onto developing flower buds. After hatching, the larvae bore into the fruit or flowers. The overwintering stage is generally the mature larva, which forms a protective cocoon in sheltered locations or under the bark.

Damage and economic impact. The larvae cause the most significant damage by feeding inside the fruit, which often results in premature drop or total decay. Damaged fruits are susceptible to secondary fungal infections and rot. Economic losses are primarily attributed to reduced crop quality, marketability, and the cost of necessary pest control interventions.

Protection measures. Effective management of Phalonia populations requires an integrated approach. Cultivation practices, such as removing fallen fruit and pruning infested branches, are crucial for reducing the overwintering population. Chemical control using approved insecticides is essential during peak emergence periods to prevent larval infestation of the fruit.
