Phalonidia moth

Phalonidia contractana is a species of moth belonging to the family Tortricidae (leafrollers) within the order Lepidoptera. This pest is characterized by its specific host plant requirements, making it a significant concern for certain agricultural and ornamental crops, particularly those within the Asteraceae family. Its adult form features cryptic coloration, which serves as camouflage during its flight period.

The primary host plants susceptible to damage by this species include various members of the genus Artemisia and other related wildflowers. The larvae create protective webs, binding leaves together to form nests where they feed safely from predators. Severe infestations significantly reduce plant biomass and compromise seed viability and overall harvest quality.

Integrated pest management (IPM) for this species involves a combination of mechanical and chemical strategies. Key methods include deep autumn tillage to disrupt overwintering sites and diligent weeding to eliminate alternative host plants.
