Systematic position. Phaneroptera gracilis belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae. Commonly known as a type of bush cricket, it is characterized by its slender build, bright green coloration, and wings that extend well beyond the abdomen. It is a highly mobile insect often found in warm, humid climates inhabiting various green landscapes.

Crop susceptibility. This pest is a generalist herbivore (polyphagous). It poses a significant threat to a wide range of horticultural and vegetable crops, including peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Furthermore, it can be problematic in ornamental nurseries and vineyards, where feeding damage can affect both the physiological state of the plants and their aesthetic value.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis: egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females use their ovipositor to insert eggs into leaf tissue, ensuring protection during the initial development phases. Nymphs hatch and begin feeding immediately, going through several molts before reaching the winged adult stage. Favorable weather conditions can lead to multiple generations within a single season.

Nature of damage and economic impact. Both nymphs and adults consume foliage, creating irregular holes and ragged leaf edges. They may also feed on flowers and developing fruit buds. Heavy infestations result in reduced photosynthesis efficiency and stunted plant growth, which translates directly into lower yields and financial losses for producers due to damaged, unmarketable produce.

Control measures. Effective management starts with regular field scouting to identify the presence of the pest early. Key strategies include:

• Maintaining weed-free field borders to eliminate alternative food sources.
• Using light traps to monitor and reduce adult population densities.
• Applying targeted insecticides when thresholds are exceeded, ensuring chemical compatibility with IPM protocols.
• Implementing physical barriers like fine mesh screens in greenhouse environments.
