Description
Pharoscymnus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Coccinellidae, order Coleoptera. While many ladybird beetles are well-known biological control agents, some members of the genus exhibit herbivorous tendencies, shifting the perception of them from beneficial predators to significant agricultural pests that require targeted intervention.
This pest primarily infests woody horticultural crops, including citrus and various fruit-bearing trees. By feeding on tender shoots and leaf tissues, they disrupt the normal metabolic processes of the host plant. Over time, heavy infestations can lead to stunted growth and reduced fruit quality, causing direct financial loss to commercial growers.
The biological cycle of Pharoscymnus consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Each stage is characterized by specific nutritional needs.
