Pharoscymnus setulosus is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Coccinellidae. Often misidentified as a pest due to its presence on crops, this insect is actually a highly beneficial predator. It is widely recognized by agronomists for its role in the biological control of scale insects that affect various tree species.

This species primarily inhabits orchards, including citrus and various stone fruit plantations. Its main food sources are scale insects (Diaspididae), which can severely damage trees by sucking plant sap and leading to reduced fruit quality and yield. By preying on these pests, Pharoscymnus setulosus acts as a natural guardian of the orchard.

The life cycle of this beetle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs in close proximity to scale insect colonies. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin to consume the pests. This specialized behavior makes them highly efficient at controlling infestations before they spread across the canopy.

There is no direct damage caused by this insect to the plants. Its interaction with crops is strictly limited to the role of an entomophage.
