Description

Taxonomic position of this insect places it within the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. These scale insects are recognized by their distinct white, waxy secretion, which covers their bodies and protects them from predators and environmental stress.

Host range primarily includes various pome and stone fruit trees, with a specific affinity for medlar (Mespilus), apple, and pear trees. They can also affect several ornamental species, colonizing branches, stems, and the undersides of leaves.

Biology and life cycle are closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Nymphs typically overwinter in bark crevices or near bud scales. As temperatures rise in spring, they resume feeding, mature into adults, and begin producing multiple generations throughout the growing season depending on the climate.

Nature of damage results from the insects piercing plant tissues to extract sap. This leads to reduced plant vigor, stunted shoot growth, and chlorosis of the foliage.
