Description

The genus Pheosia belongs to the family Notodontidae, known as prominent moths. These insects are classified within the order Lepidoptera. In forestry and arboriculture, species such as the Lesser Swallow Prominent (Pheosia tremula) are recognized as significant defoliators that primarily affect deciduous trees.

The primary host plants for Pheosia larvae are members of the Salicaceae family, specifically poplars, aspens, and willows. While they prefer these hosts, the larvae may occasionally infest other deciduous species if preferred food sources are scarce. Outbreaks can result in substantial defoliation of trees in shelterbelts and urban park settings.

The life cycle typically consists of one or two generations per year, depending on the geographic climate. The overwintering phase usually occurs in the soil, where the pupae reside within protective cocoons. Adult moths emerge during the spring and remain active until late summer, displaying nocturnal behavior and a strong attraction to artificial light sources.

Damage is characterized by larvae feeding on leaves, often starting with skeletonizing and progressing to complete defoliation of the canopy. The harmful impact on trees includes reduced photosynthetic efficiency, leading to premature leaf drop and decreased annual wood growth. Severely infested trees may suffer from stress, rendering them susceptible to secondary pests like wood-boring beetles.

Management strategies focus on forest health monitoring and the application of biological control agents, such as formulations containing Bacillus thuringiensis, which are highly effective during the early larval stages. For ornamental landscapes, systemic insecticides may be used if economic thresholds are exceeded. Promoting natural biodiversity, including insectivorous birds and parasitic wasps, serves as a crucial preventive measure.
