Phosphorus bibundiensis is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the subfamily Lamiinae within the family Cerambycidae. This pest, similar to many members of the tribe Lamiini, is primarily specialized in attacking woody plants, being native to tropical African ecosystems where it thrives in diverse forest and orchard environments.
The beetle primarily targets woody crops, including fruit trees and various forest species. It poses a significant threat to cocoa, coffee, and specific citrus plantations. By boring into the bark and wood of trunks and branches, the larvae cause structural damage that severely weakens the host plant and can ultimately lead to tree death if left unmanaged.
The biology of this species follows the typical pattern of wood-boring insects. Adult beetles lay eggs in bark crevices or deliberate incisions made on the host. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae tunnel into the cambium layer and the woody tissue, creating extensive galleries.
