Description

Systematic position. The California oak moth (Phryganidia californica) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Notodontidae. It is a native species primarily found in the coastal regions of California, recognized as a significant defoliator that periodically experiences dramatic population outbreaks.

Host plants. The primary hosts are oak trees (genus Quercus). The pest shows a strong preference for coastal live oak (Quercus agrifolia) and canyon live oak (Quercus chrysolepis). While these trees are the main food source, severe outbreaks can impact urban and ornamental landscaping where these oak species are present.

Biology and life cycle. The species typically completes two generations per year in the warmer parts of its range. Winter is spent in the egg or early larval stage. Adults are slender, light-brown moths that emerge to lay eggs on the leaves. The larvae feed voraciously throughout the spring and summer months, leading to high damage levels during peak growth seasons.

Damage and economic impact. Larval feeding causes significant leaf loss. Early instars skeletonize the leaves, while later instars consume the entire foliage. Repeated defoliation can weaken trees, making them susceptible to drought stress and pathogens, such as oak root fungus, although healthy trees are often able to recover after a period of leaf regrowth.

Management strategies. Control is often focused on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Chemical pesticides are rarely required for mature trees in forest settings, but in ornamental areas, biological control agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are highly effective. Monitoring for egg masses and early larval activity allows for timely intervention before severe defoliation occurs.
